A minimum of 2 years police academy. Like AA degree with police academy integrated. Public Policy, deescalation, self defense, how to make a potentially hazardous stop. Use the bullhorn not the semi automatic shots in the back. If they can’t pass a rigorous 2 year training period, they don’t get on the force. Background check, fingerprinting (live scan, etc.).
It takes 16 weeks to make a soldier trained to take orders and kill. Solders are made into killers as it should be.
16 weeks is not long enough to make a guardian. A guardian respects and protects the public. They should not be trained as combatants at war with citizens on the streets of America. They make the streets unsafe. 2 years to ingrain public service backed up by Guardian Courage, requirement to engage shooters even if they are alone. Protection of the innocent at great risk to their lives is why we pay them well. If they don’t agree, they can be discovered and kicked out of the academy in time to save lives. Presently cops are a danger to citizens, too many cowards on the force. Weed then out. Also it’s imperative that qualified immunity is removed from all officers. If a solder kills the wrong person under the wrong circumstances, during active war, they are court marshaled and imprisonment if convicted. . It should be 10 times more stringent for civilian officers of the law. They must be blameless or dismissed and prosecuted. Just like the police mobilize so forcefully if one of theirs is killed in action. The investigations unit of the citizens oversight board should go into 10X overdrive if a single citizen is killed by an officer under all but the most witnessed and apparent shooting. A man in public and with 10 witnesses fired at an officer after raping a victim. Police shoot from 5-10 feet away. Perpetrator dies that’s a good shooting. Witnesses see the perp shoot at the officer in broad daylight no ambiguity. Any other scenario needs in depth third party investigation (never does a police department investigate themselves). If they all quit, fine get rid of the rats as they jump ship, means they are the bad apples. They are barley responding to calls of the poor anyway. Only upper middle class departments respond quickly and they are only slightly better because rich cities hold their police accountable and the police don’t want to lose the cushy super safe working conditions. Cops will either confront a overmatched gunmen with their 40 cal handgun or they won’t. If they will, they deserved the cushy job (more electricians die on the job each year) good pay and generous benefits. If they won’t, they don’t deserved to be police officers and need to be put into a database that is required to be checked prior to employment. If they are in the database for any reason they can never be law enforcement again! Period! Cops get paid to supposedly pit their life on the line (it’s basically the definition of policing). If they do not uphold their oath, they should be finished with extreme prejudice and never be allowed in law enforcement again.
